Zero Data Collection

Summary: This extension collects no personal data. It stores only two user preferences locally in your browser using Chrome's built-in storage. No information is transmitted to any server.

Effective date: February 14, 2026  |  Last updated: February 14, 2026

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how the Bookmarks.ie - New Tab Chrome extension (“the Extension”) handles user data. The Extension is published by bookmarks.ie (“we”, “us”, “our”).

We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Extension was designed from the ground up with a privacy-first approach: it performs its function entirely within your browser and makes zero network requests.

2. What the Extension Does

The Extension has a single purpose: it replaces Chrome's default new tab page with an instant redirect to your bookmarks.ie dashboard URL. You can configure the redirect URL and enable or disable the redirect through a popup settings interface.

3. Data We Collect

3.1 Data stored locally

The Extension stores exactly two values using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.sync API:

Data stored locally by the extension
SettingTypePurpose
enabledBoolean (true/false)Whether the new tab redirect is active
redirectUrlString (URL)The URL to redirect new tabs to

These values are synced across your Chrome browsers via your Google account using Chrome's native sync infrastructure. We do not operate or control this sync mechanism — it is managed entirely by Google Chrome.

3.2 Data we do NOT collect

The Extension does not collect, access, store, or transmit any of the following:

  • Personally identifiable information (name, email, address, age, ID numbers)
  • Authentication information (passwords, credentials, PINs, tokens)
  • Financial or payment information
  • Health information
  • Location data (GPS, IP address, region)
  • Browsing history or web history
  • User activity (clicks, keystrokes, mouse movements, scroll behaviour)
  • Website content (text, images, audio, video)
  • Personal communications (emails, messages, chat)
  • Cookies or session data
  • Device identifiers or fingerprints

4. How Data Is Used

The two stored settings are used solely to:

  1. Determine whether to redirect the new tab page (based on the enabled value)
  2. Know which URL to redirect to (based on the redirectUrl value)

These settings are never used for any other purpose.

5. Data Sharing and Transfer

We do not sell, trade, rent, or transfer any user data to third parties for any reason.

  • No data is sent to bookmarks.ie servers by the Extension
  • No data is sent to any third-party service, analytics platform, or advertising network
  • No data is shared with any other extension or application
  • No data is used for advertising, profiling, or marketing purposes
  • No data is used to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes

6. Network Activity

The Extension makes zero network requests. It does not:

  • Fetch remote code or scripts
  • Send analytics or telemetry data
  • Communicate with any API or server
  • Load external resources (fonts, images, stylesheets)
  • Ping any tracking or monitoring endpoints

The only network activity that occurs is the browser's standard page load when it navigates to your configured redirect URL — this is a normal browser navigation, not initiated by extension code sending data.

7. Permissions

The Extension requests only one permission:

Extension permissions and their purposes
PermissionReason
storageRequired to save and retrieve your two settings (enabled state and redirect URL) using chrome.storage.sync.

No additional permissions (such as tabs, activeTab, webRequest, cookies, or host permissions) are requested or used.

8. Security

The Extension implements the following security measures:

  • URL validation: Only http:// and https:// URLs are accepted as redirect targets. Dangerous schemes such as javascript:, data:, and vbscript: are blocked at both the input (popup) and execution (redirect) layers.
  • No inline scripts: All JavaScript is loaded from separate files, fully compliant with Chrome's Content Security Policy.
  • No dynamic code execution: The Extension does not use eval(), Function(), document.write(), or any form of dynamic code generation.
  • No remote code: All code is bundled locally within the Extension package.
  • XSS prevention: The Extension uses textContent exclusively and never writes to innerHTML.

9. Data Retention and Deletion

Your two settings persist in chrome.storage.sync until you:

  • Click the Reset button in the Extension's popup (restores default values)
  • Uninstall the Extension (Chrome automatically removes all associated storage data)
  • Clear your browser's extension data through Chrome settings

Because no data is sent to any server, there is no server-side data to delete.

10. Children's Privacy

The Extension does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age in your jurisdiction). Because the Extension collects no personal information whatsoever, it is compliant with COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) and equivalent regulations.

11. Your Rights

Under applicable data protection laws (including GDPR, CCPA, and similar regulations), you have the right to:

  • Access: View your stored settings at any time via the Extension's popup
  • Modify: Change your redirect URL or toggle state at any time
  • Delete: Reset to defaults or uninstall the Extension to remove all data
  • Portability: Your settings are visible in plain text in the popup interface

Since we collect no personal data and operate no server-side storage, there is no additional data to request, export, or delete.

12. Changes to This Policy

If we make changes to this Privacy Policy, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. For significant changes that affect data collection practices, we will also update the Extension's version and description in the Chrome Web Store to notify users.

13. Open Source Transparency

The Extension's source code is fully reviewable. It consists of six small files (manifest, two HTML pages, two JavaScript files, and one CSS file) totalling under 10 KB of code. Any user or reviewer can verify that the Extension behaves exactly as described in this policy.
